review 1: I thought Gothic novels died with Honore de Balzac, and then I picked up Zafon. Shadow of the Wind was the first book written by Zafon that I read and let me tell you, beginning wasn't easy. For some reason it felt like a chore getting through first two chapters but I'm so glad I did because afterwards I was not able to put this book down. It has everything, magic, love, tragedy, philosophy and the best thing is that unlike work of Paolo Coehlo (whom I hate with passion)is not pretentious and soppy. My only problem was with technicality, Zafon sometimes rushes through the story, kind of like he wants to wrap up suddenly even though he's been thorough and patient in other parts. You can tell he's extremely passionate writer although not necessarily skilled one when it com... morees technical parts, never mind though. He's given me emotional orgasm, his imagination and its use in story lines is captivating and for the first time I cried like a baby after finishing the last page. Hugely recommended!
review 2: I read this on the flight to South America — and couldn't put it down. S. Zafon's characterizations are rich, and make me thankful I'm not coming of age again! The storyline, while complex, is chock full of surprising twists and turns (depicted realistically). I enjoy the structure of his writing, recognizing an artistic way with words that doesn't overwhelm his intent, but enhances it. It has been a very long time since I've read a "new-to-me" author I've enjoyed this much, and I heartily recommend this book if you're looking for an original, beautifully colored suspense. I look forward to reading more of Zafon's work. less
