review 1: I don't know why it has taken me so long to decide to read this novel. I guess that, despite being a huge reader of science fiction and crime thrillers, I always thought spy stories were a bit silly. This dark and gritty drama is not that. It is tautly written and beautifully austere. In my case, it was also the perfect accompaniment to a visit to Berlin coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the fall of the wall. My appetite is now thoroughly whetted for some more le Carré.
