review 1: Slow start, then intense suspense where I couldn't put it down, and the last third was okay. Most of the story is broken into chapters featuring one of three main character's perspectives, but occasionally the author introduces new characters- contributing a lot of backstory - which somewhat removes your focus from the plight of the 3 main characters...which I didn't like. Appreciated the book for making readers aware of the abuse of power and abuse of people in North Korea, and the sex-trafficking underworld in the two other settings in this book.
review 2: Incredible. Each character's story was so nuanced and authentic- deeply felt and painful lives without needless sentimentality. How a man who has never been to North Korea could write a story so poignant
... moreabout women is... unbelievable. If you have the least interest in North Korea, I HIGHLY recommend this book. You can get a feeling for the lives of those who live in and are the real North Korea, without all the tainted opinions of diplomats and politicians. After all- isn't it so that the ordinary person in North Korea lies at the heart of what we are concerned about when it comes to North Korea anyway? less

Superb book about life in North Korea and the fate of some orphan girls. A real page turner.

I had trouble putting this book down. While disturbing, it is also a story of survival.

Actually better book than my rating tells. I just didn't enjoy it due to subject matter

Intense. A story of forced prostitution and servitude.
