review 1: Why should you believe me, the brother of the author, that this is a great book and worth your time? First, I like science fiction. Second, I'm not afraid to be honest about what I like and don't like about the book, even though it was written by a guy I used to accuse of stealing my Halloween candy. I read early versions of the book and gave candid feedback. Third, there are hundreds of thousands of new books written each year, so I believe that even a relative can provide useful information to help you decide if this is a book you want to read. Finally, I wouldn't write a positive review if I didn't believe it.The drift wars is a real page turner, the kind of book where you want to see what happens next. It was a thrilling read, with a storyline that slowly reveals itsel... moref. The possible future described in the book seemed probable and the style of warfare possible. I found the descriptions vivid, and it was easy to imagine the scenes described in the book. Ultimately, I was able to suspend disbelief and enjoy the book. It’s not for everyone. It’s about war, and has graphic sections. But if you like science fiction and a bit of a puzzle, Drift Wars is a lot of fun.
review 2: First, full disclosure: the publisher of this book sent me a copy to read and review. That said, my sentiments about this book are genuine.I was surprised that Brett James's follow-up to his espionage debut is a science fiction novel. I appreciate a writer who leaps into new territory, and James brings an intriguing story to the genre. At first, "Drift Wars" feels very similar to "Starship Troopers" and subsequent novels that posit interplanetary warfare and exo-armor and the like; soon, however, James steers his tale in a different direction, leaving a growing number of questions in his wake. The story becomes a well-balanced concoction of warfare and mystery, with James giving appropriate amounts of prose and time to each. The final stretch of the novel really caught me off guard, and I closed the book feeling like I had just digested a toothsome 60s-era space opera.I hope this book catches the attention of many readers--and, in fact, this desire compels me to write a review more than any sense of debt to the generous publisher. "Drift Wars" is a fun read and a complete helping of thoughtful science fiction. Finally, I commend whoever planned the design of the novel, as it is unique, attractive, and appropriate for the contents within. Altogether, this is a well-written and well-produced novel. less
