review 1: This is a great collection of Batman stories, spotlighting the art of Eduardo Risso in beautiful black and white. If you're a fan of '100 Bullets' or Brian Azzarello's writing (as I am), and you think the Azzarello/Risso team is perfect for Batman, you have to read this. Especially since this is the only place where you'll find all of Azzarello/Risso's collaborations on Batman (including the Flashpoint miniseries) in one place.
review 2: This collection of black and white stories by Risso and Azzarello is very visually powerful. Artwork throughout has a consistent flavor reminiscent of Frank Miller, even having a cameo by someone who appears to be a Mutant gang member. However, the story-writing has has emotional kick to it on its own regards. Variations of th
... moree classic backstory of the Wayne murders (having Bruce last words to his parents implied to being he hates them due to an argument the day before; as well as the Flashpoint story wherein Bruce's death has dreadful emotional consequences for Thomas and Martha that beyond the norm), provide their own emotional resonance. Batman is presented in black and white art (Noir and Blanc comes to mind), though rarely is he facing moral situations that are clearly defined. From having inadvertently making a target out of a suspect, to having the lone survivor of a shooting being much more (and worse), these storytellers offer a neo-noir as ethically ambiguous as anything by Hammett. less
