review 1: Not bad at all, Azzarello. You've got my interest.I had to groan a little at some of the one-liners in here, mostly because they didn't seem to flow too naturally, but other than that, the characterization is done well enough that I can sort of feel out a voice for Strife, Hermes, and the like. I am not sure yet what to make of Zola as a character, but enjoy the richness Wonder Woman is being given in these. Gotta say, I took no small amount of delight in seeing mythology played with in this volume. It may not yet give Sandman a run for his money, but it will at least give it a trot for the parking change in his 1970 AMC Gremlin's cupholder, and for me, that's a start.
review 2: I've heard a lot of complaints that Azzarello's Wonder Woman is too different from ... morewhat the character was intended to be. She's the daughter of Zeus now, not formed from clay. The Amazons are not the female utopian society envisioned by creator Marston; instead their society is just as corrupt as ours. Some have said that this undoes Wondy, she's not herself anymore.I disagree. I know what the point of having Wondy come from a perfect culture was, but honestly, it was boring. Wondy is still herself. In fact, she's more herself. She's good and honest and loves everyone even though she comes from a messed up environment. Also, the art and character designs are fantastic. Will pick up the next volume. I'll forgive "New 52" lots of faults for giving me an awesome Wonder Woman. less
