review 1: I agree with the main argument McLaren makes in this book....the need for a Christian identity that is more open, loving, and compassionate. An identity that is focused on "benevolence and solidarity rather than rivalry and hostility." There may be no bigger need In the Christian church than for us to assess who we are and who are called to be, and to focus on being more Christ-like in how we interact with people of other faiths. However, in many of McLaren's recent works, it seems that he is suggesting that belief in Christ is optional. Jesus should be followed and we should model our lives after his, but actually believing in Him as the Son of God isn't really a necessity. Admittedly, McLaren doesn't state this directly, but the idea is expressed throughout. This id... moreea troubles me as a follower of Christ. Jesus often spoke in parables and indirect truths, but He was explicit about who He was. That being said, McLaren is challenging us to look deeply at our faith and the practice of our faith, which I believe is much needed. Voices like his are necessary if the Church is going to grow be what it needs to be in this world.
review 2: McLaren jumps to a few conclusions about people who back away from a version of Christianity that they can't accept (strong-hostile), but don't choose a different version if Christianity to replace it. The idea that Christianity is what staves off rampant consumerism in the world today...places far too much value on organized, traditional religion in the first place. I am disappointed. I was looking forward to something less fundamentally flawed from McLaren, who sent me on my own journey of open minded and open hearted faith 12 years ago with More Ready Than You Realize. less

Takes too long to provide new insights, but it's worth the read once he gets there.

It ended up being one of the best books for discussion at our faith club.
