review 1: I'm fast becoming a Brian Freeman fan. I really enjoy the Jonathan Stride/Serena Dials series. This is the fourth book in the series, however, you could read this one as a stand alone. Mr. Freeman talks about some previous cases but not in great detail and if you know about them then great...if you don't then it wets your appetitite to read the previous books. I just feel like you really get to know Jonathan Stride in depth in this book. It is the most emotional one of the series so far. It takes you back to when he was seventeen years old and why he wants to be a cop. Serena Dials doesn't play a huge part is this book. I think Mr. Freeman is still getting her to find her way in Duluth. The plot takes you back 30 years to search for a killer in a cold case and the... moren brings you forward to see if that person is still involved in crime. I would highly recommend this series and this book to anyone that likes suspense and mysteries.
review 2: Good but not great. Understandably dark. However, unlike some other authors I prefer, no "lightness" in non-critical aspects of the story (romance, humor, etc.). I might have enjoyed it more had I read it in order. There were several references to character evolution and past scenarios which felt a bit long given I didn't know the context. Don't know that I enjoyed it enough to go back and read his other books. I would check out the next in this series. less
