review 1: I loved this book. What an unusual take on so many topics: impending death, infidelity, the definition of family, of love, of hate, of forgiveness. And marriage, once again, or still I guess, I continue my voyage (research?) on the topic of marriage in its many permutations. Lucy loves Artie and Artie loves Lucy but Artie also loves Eleanor, and Elspa and Gretchen and Gwen and Springbird and the woman who loves elevators.... Lucy finds about his serial infidelity and shortly after, his impending death. The dilemna is how to negotiate the space between discovery and finality. I have always believed in the power of forgiveness. It is necessary and healthy to forgive and be forgiven. To carry a grudge, a wound, a remembered and often visited wrong is a very heavy burden... more. To forgive someone is to do yourself a greater service. The enduring message of this book, I think, was Lucy's determination to have something good come from the bad for each member of this mismatched family. Even though she had no clue what good would come for her, she actively pursues the good for others, even loveable, cheating Artie.Well done. Brava!
review 2: I honestly found this a surprisingly good book. I started the book hoping justice would be served to the husband for cheating, but found something completely different. In many ways, he suffered more than his wife and I did actually start feeling sorry for him. A sweet and heart-warming book that encourages all to remember that even though horrible things may happen, some good may come out of it anyway. less
