review 1: I would probably rather give this 3 1/2 stars, but as that is not an option, three will have to suffice. This book had gorgeous descriptions of food and grief, a mountain in Paris and what it can mean to love. Those things drew me in and kept me reading. What killed it for me was the ending. Is it really feasible that a woman spends two years mourning her dead husband and then in the span of less than three weeks (amid the presence of a certain Frenchman) she's just "over it"? Of course, there's the trite "I'll always love him", and of course I believe that she should move on. But at the beginning of this book, Heidi is barely functioning, and by the end, (maybe a month or two?) she's ready to start a life with someone new. It felt rushed, and unrealistic, which was frustr... moreating as her pain had felt very real.
review 2: I almost read this book in one setting - engaging, emotionally satisfying. Basically a story of healing and coming back to life after horrible loss. The heroine is a widow with a young son who is still wrapped up in her grief two years after her husband is killed in a car crash. Her family tries valiantly to help her overcome her grief with little effect until she returns to the family home in Provence, where circumstances intervene in her return to happiness. The device of a house as healer is a little contrived, but the author manages it very well. I felt a strong desire to have such a place of my own. less
