review 1: I expected and wanted to love this book, because I liked Scott Pilgrim so much. And I did enjoy it, but I also found myself having a surprisingly hard time getting through the book. I kept having to take breaks. This was perhaps in part due to the odd use of narrator: the book has an omniscient narrative voice that keeps getting into little back-and-forths with Katie, the main character. Not my favorite thing. In addition, most pages had very wide margins, which disrupted the flow of reading, as if every page was a one-off. These are only minor quibbles, and the overall story was fun and I liked the characters, especially Hazel, so still 4 stars.
review 2: Not sure what exactly to think about this one. The story itself is a bit of a parable. (Be careful what y
... moreou wish for? Those who don't learn from their past are doomed to repeat it?) Our main character Katie is selfish and not particularly likable (and while I suspect that's the point, I'm not sure why we should believe she'll have changed her ways.) As always, the art is dynamo and BLO is on his A-game on that front. But I don't see myself recommending this one, unlike Scott Pilgrim. less
