review 1: Well...I just finished the book - it's 2 am and I don't even have enough moist in my eyes to cry, but that doesn't stop my whole being from being in a completely sorrowful state... As always a greatly built plot, up - to - life characters and a touching storyline. Probably it's me having a thing for stories from the second world war, but I find them a particularly amazing source of book fabric. Anyway, to the point, Lackberg is again giving her best to keep the reader involved and in a constant necessity of going forward. No doubt this book hits a painful spot - the second world war. I can hardly think of a book that reviews the lives of the ordinaty people in the state of war that leaves the reader lukewarm. I do enjoy the devolpment of Melberg's character rather greatly... more - it started noticeable with the "Gallows birds" and in this one Melberg is presented as an undoubtly likeable old grumpy cat ( dog, in his case ). The plot is skillfuly twisted again - no cracks, no hitches to catch the eye of the demanding crime-book-lovers. One thing that itches me a bit is the final - of course I did like the last phrase as a strong epitaph, but I just needed a much clearer ending. Still that can be a thing easy to digest, having in mind that there is another book from the series waiting for me in the morning. (So I get to know what happens with Ernst)
review 2: I got so bogged down in this. So many characters and subplots and switching back and forth that I got lost several times. To be fair, I didn't know some of these characters had been in previous books, that might have helped if I'd read the others. The cover is great - but misleading. Yes, a missing child is sort of at the heart of this but the story was not what I was expecting. I started to suspect the murderer part way through but I think she did a good job with the red herrings! maybe too good a job for my small brain to follow. less

I really enjoy the Scandinavia mysteries and the depth of the characters in the books.
