review 2: The lost boy is the 7th book in the Patrick Hedström/Erica Falck s
... moreeries. The plot is very detailed and excellently researched, but a bit too slow in my opinion, especially when compared to Camilla Läckberg's previous books in the series. The financial officer of the town of Fjallbäcka, a man whom everyone seemed to have respected and liked, is murdered and his body is discovered by his parents who are severely grieving the loss of their only child. At first, Patrick and his police team do not have any clue and many parties are interviewed, possible paths explored, all actions are elaborately described.Gradually, the ultimate puzzle piece is found towards the end, though the reader may have had an idea about who murdered the man, much sooner in the story. As usual, the plot is cleverly interwoven with another story in the past; this story which is narrated in separate chapters in between the present story, seems to promise a sparkling end, however it turned out to be quite dull, But, the relation between these two plots becomes clear. Also, regarding the story in the past, I have my doubts about the feasibility of an isolated life on an uninhabited island over a period of several years. The familiar characters from her previous books here also make their appearance, like the opportunistic Chief Inspector Mellberg, who turns into a real family man and his exploits at times add a touch of humour to the story. As usual, Erika's sister Anna, who at last, has found some happiness with her new partner, Dan, and their mutual child'ren, is again suffering from some misfortunes which throw her in a depression. The fact that Erika, a writer, constantly meddles with her husband's police activities, and goes as far as interviewing the suspects on her own, and even risks her life, is rather annoying and has a negative impact on the credibility of the story. The writer's descriptions Fjallbäcka are very vivid and poetic even, and by virtually touring the little town via google Streetview the reader can inhale the atmosphere and get completely absorbed in the story.Similar to her previous books, the story is very beautifully written. The English translation is very good. less
