review 1: This book is very reminiscent of Anne McCaffrey's PERN series, but with differences. But just like the PERN series, this book dragged me into the story and made me want to be a "Child of the Wolves/Lind" too. I hold the PERN series very highly as they were the first books that led me into this genre so to be compared to them is a big compliment from me.This book has a lot of detail in it and there is always something going on. The characters draw you into their lives and you are concerned about their welfare and pleased with their achievements. The planet is very well described and the Lind, as well as their enemies the Larg, even more so. I love a book that makes me laugh out loud but a book that can make me cry is even better as it means that I have been completely e... morenthralled. I was in tears for about 10% of this book (from about 79% onwards) and had to go back and re-read it.This world and its characters are just too much for one book, although you could quite happily read this as a standalone. For me, I've just put the rest on my wishlist as they are too good to lose.Definitely recommended to any PERN fans or fans of the fantasy genre.
review 2: Two vast spaceships, one carrying colonists, the other convicts, crash-land on a planet which turns out to be inhabited by two tribes of giant telepathic wolves, one good, one evil. Any guesses how this one plays out?A free read, and a meaty one at that. But oh, does the author need a good editor. Some clunky phrases and lots of telling where there should be showing (in fact, telling as well as showing: why inform us that 'Kitten' is one character's pet name for another when it's been obvious from the context for the last fifty pages?), and an omniscient narrator of the annoying 'Little did they know that elsewhere on the planet at that very moment...' type. Also rather more interest in rape than I'm comfortable with.I won't be paying to read the rest of the series, but this first instalment passed the time enjoyably enough. less
