review 1: I have recently been on a reading binge of Hiaasen's fiction and have been enjoying his books immensely.I figured a plunge into his non-fiction stuff would be worthwhile, and overall, it was.As long as you read this with the understanding this is a collection of op-ed pieces, nothing more, nothing less, you will do fine.If you obtain your news exclusively from mainstream media, specifically networks like FoxNews, you will be sorely disappointed. While Hiaasen doesn't come out and say what party he aligns to, if any, it's obvious he is not a Republican. This was a relief for me as I am not a Republican. But if you are, prepare to be offended repeatedly, prepare to generate lots of spittle as you look for the words to say.If you obtain your news exclusively from mainstrea... morem media, specifically all the networks that aren't FoxNews, you will probably have this thing gold-plated and put on your fireplace mantle. I am not a Democrat either, but I could see where Hiaasen leans on that side.I did have to skip a couple of chapters altogether. At one point, after reading three columns that all said basically the exact same thing other than changing someone's name, I hit fast forward. The point he misses with his selections is that all elected officials are morons, they are all in the back pocket of lobbyists, major industries and special interest groups. However, plenty of what he writes gives food for thought and in more than a few cases his perspective was quite refreshing. I am a native Floridian, and while I enjoy trips out of state to other areas, this is my home, and it is obvious he feels very strongly about preserving and improving the well being of the things that make Florida special - her environment and natural resources, her diverse citizenry, among others, not to mention the well being and mankind and nature in general across the globe. For that I give the man kudos.
review 2: I've never read any of Carl Hiaasen's novels, but after reading this collection of his newspaper columns, I'm headed for the library to check some out. I enjoyed the sharp wit and political savvy of the non fiction, although not being a Florida resident, some of it was lost on me. In some of the Goodreads reviews I've read, even those reviewers who disagreed with his political stance had high praise for his novels, and I look forward to giving them a try. less
