review 1: I really tried to like this book, I even finished the entire book just to see if it would pick up at all and it failed me. Overall it had a great theme, plot , and setting plus it had the bonus of being part of one of my favorite genres (mystery) yet I still didn't love the book. The main aspect that made me not enjoy the book was that there was way to many characters and events going on at the same time that made the book confusing at times. The setting of the book was in the very small town of Black Falls, Vermont. Being that it was a small town every character was connected to another in some way, there were about 15 or so characters total that were mentioned periodically in the book that became hard to follow. Not only were there too many characters involved but all of... more them seemed to be either kin, friend, or romantically involved with one another which added another level of confusion at times when trying to figure at who was who. There also seemed to be a lot of tragic events that happened to this group of people, they all seemed to have had something bad happened to them in the small town. Some in the past and some present which the author would reference a lot from time to time so it seemed to be always something happening. If I were to tell the author anything, it would be to keep the main thing the main thing. The story would have been a lot more enjoyable and less confusing if there were fewer main characters and also fewer side stories that detracts from the main plot. Overall the story was ok, but what made it lose points was that it was simply confusing at times and hard to follow.
review 2: My first book by Carla Neggers and I am aware of the fact that this story is part of a series, but still ...It took me an awful long time to get into the story. It was drawn out and loooong and lots of people involved in many places. Confusing. For a little summary you need to go by the blurb, I wouldn't have a clue how to write one. All in all, the plot was okay and kind of different from other books I've read, which made it interesting for me, but as I said above ... IMHO it needed a bit more oomph to pull me in more.I wouldn't recommend it as such and I have to admit 3 stars is generous, but the plot was okay. less

I read this book out of order, but even so, it was very confusing and had too many characters.
