review 1: This book is about an anesthesiologist whose 8 yr patient dies during surgery, under her care. I found the book difficult to "get into" because of the abundance of medical jargon. The first section of the book hammered home the messages that the hospital anesthesiology group was understaffed, had an abusive workload, and muddled their own case histories by hopping in and out of each other's surgeries "to help" each other. It was an obvious accident waiting to happen and the plot did not disappoint. This part of the story line went on much too long for my liking. It wasn't till the family relationships were developed that I started to enjoy the book. After that, the gently weaving of home and work plot lines was extremely engaging and I found myself happy to have read the ... morebook.
review 2: Being from the medical community I loved the artistic descriptions that connect science to human life. They were as colorful as the color on the tip of an artist's brush stroke. I'm torn between the blame of a death on the doctor versus unforeseen circumstances. The unfortunate truth is we all make mistakes...when doctors make them the cost is all too high. Love the twist. Artful writing. A must read for anyone working in the or. I'll never look at an anesthesiologist the same way again. Their work truly is art... less
