review 1: Eleanor Trewynn, a widow living in a small fishing village in 1960’s Cornwall, finds a body in the stockroom of the charity shop for which she collects donations. Her niece Megan, who has overcome the odds against women and become a Detective Sergeant, is on the investigating police team. The story is pleasant enough with its appealing Cornish setting and Megan is an engaging character. Unfortunately the plot is clunky and depends on supposedly intelligent characters being really stupid.

Eleanor's lapses of memory and willingness to believe the best of everyone infuriate Inspector Scumble, who is also boss to Eleanor's nie... morece Megan, a rare policewoman in the 1960's. What Scumble doesn't realize is that Eleanor has had a long and varied career as an aid worker in parts of the world where locking your door is less important than having a roof over your head. A terrific series opener from Dunn, whose Daisy Dalrymple series is deservedly popular. less
