review 1: One of my favorite series, this one starts out as the typical English country house murder--although the murder itself doesn't actually happen until halfway though the book! Because of this delay, the suspense is built up and you get to be thoroughly acquainted with all the residents of the household. Without giving too much away, the murder gets events moving with a bang as soon as DCI Fletcher arrives to join his wife for what was supposed to be a quiet weekend in the country. Because he doesn't want to get involved and step on the local's toes, Alec allows the local inspector to lead the investigation but, as always, with Daisy's help they finally find out who murdered the very odious Lord Rydal. Very enjoyable.
review 2: This is the eighteenth in a series,
... moreand while I suppose it's possible the previous books had plenty of sparkle which has worn off as the series progressed, this put me off enough that I won't be trying them. It takes 150 pages until anyone dies, which is only acceptable in a mystery if written by a particularly good writer, who doesn't need to rely on the puzzle-plot to keep readers engaged. I assumed things would look up when we finally did get to that stage, but that was when it became apparent nothing was going to make me want to actually finish it. I skim-read to find out who was the murderer and was very bored by the solution. The writing is bland and clumsy, there's almost no discernible characterisation, particularly of the heroine, and there was almost no period feel (it's set in the twenties). less

I love the series. This was anther great read following Daisy Dalrymple in England in the 20s.

An entertaining romp with British upper crust set in 1926.
