review 1: (Sep) This was a nice book, albeit a bit dull. Sebastian is a wounded war veteran, who came home to find his father gone mad, his property mostly gone, ditto his family money. A wounded leg makes it hard for him to get around, but he manages. The villagers think he's potenitally mad, like his father, and he's been accused of being a theif by the father of his former best friend. There are also whispers that he's a murdered, as his father disappears one night and is never seen again. Abigail is a charming girl from a good family who has bought the estate adjoining Sebastian's property. They meet, and he's struck by her beauty and her sweet personality. Slowly, he emerges from his shell and develops a flirtation with Abigail. While the description of this book makes it sound... more as if there is a love triangle, the second character, Sebastian's former best friend Benedict, does not even meet Abigail until about 60% through the book. She never seems that interested in him, and not surprisingly, Abigail and Sebastian, after one small misunderstanding, find their way to love and a HEA. It appearsas though Abigail's sister Penny and Ben might star in the next book, but I think CL will have to really write well to make Benedict less of an ass in my opinion. Sweet, not too steamy, a good but ultimately ordinary and forgettable HR.
review 2: I confess. Scarred, beastly heroes are my catnip. Looove them.Unfortunately, this turns out to be really meh. The hero didn't work for me and the heroine is a twit. "Oh noes, hero's been gone for two weeks and hasn't written (even tho he hadn't made any promises), what am I to do? Oh, well, I'll just start hanging out with this other guy because it's been sooooo long." And this is after they have sex. Two years? Yeah, I'd totally buy that, two weeks? Now that I think about it, it's the heroine that totally drops this rating. She starts out decent and likeable, whereas her younger sister is a twit. Then, inexplicably, they have a personality transplant and the heroine becomes the twit. bleh.Neither this book, not its heroine are awful, but who wants to spend their time on mediocrity? There are plenty of other historicals that are more entertaining. less
