review 2: I think the best word I can use to describe this book is "shallow". If you'd eavesdropped on my thoughts during this book, you would have heard a lot of "Meh"s, "O-kay"s, and "Get on with it, already!"s. It may have been partly because of the way I read the book: I stumbled upon the eBook on Overdrive, checked it out, and finished in a
... morefew hours. Maybe it didn't really sink in, yet... but I honestly feel like I didn't read anything. The characters didn't do anything for me. The story switched between the POV of Aimee and Alan, but sometimes I couldn't tell who was talking -- there was very little difference. Despite their single-parent families and sort-of niceness, I felt zero sympathy for these people. One could have died, and I still would have been like, "Meh." Also, insta-love alert! They start making Bambi eyes at each other on the same day one broke up with someone else. Guys, I don't think emotions work that way.It was like they were all zombies, stumbling around and reading their lines, deadpan: "I liked her." "I liked him." "I was sad."And the adults! I don't normally pay much attention to the adult characters -- I am a kid, after all -- but I still expect them to be there, doing their thing. The whole plot happened under these people's noses, and they were equally zombie-like. Maybe worse. If my parents came home to a ripped-up, cat-clawed, trashed bedroom and a messed-up house, they would NOT have said, "It's okay. We'll just get new stuff." Not by a long shot. The plot also didn't work for me. The premise was vaguely interesting, but I feel like I know just about as much about it as I did in the first chapter. None of the supernatural elements seem to have a clear origin or cause -- not even a supernatural one. Very little was explained, and the few clues given were repeated to the point of frustration. Yes, people are acting oddly. Not like themselves. In an aggressive manner. I get it. Now tell me something else! Please!Overall, I feel like this story just didn't DO anything. I don't think I smiled or even nodded appreciatively even once. (Though I sort of grunted in an amused way when they mentioned the eBay Cheeto.) In conclusion... meh. less
