review 1: I really found this story intriguing. I liked the fact that there were undying topics discussed and delt with. It was interesting to read the males point of view about depression. Ettie was different than what I expected. To me she seemed to have almost a child like attitude. While Wyatt was acting like a rebellious teenager or possibly having an early midlife crisis. Blake was an asshole with passive aggressive attitude. The family dynamic was strong and supporting along with the friendships in the story.I did enjoy this book however I just expected something different from story when first starting this book.
review 2: 4.5 stars rounded up to 5. This was a wonderful read about a young, 22-year old girl, Ettie, who breaks up with here boyfriend because
... morehe wants to try and change her free spirit, exuberant ways. She's lived a fairly horrible life and takes childlike pleasure in seeing new and exciting things around her which does rub a lot of people, including the now ex-boyfriend, the wrong way.Ettie enters a bar to drown her sorrows and sitting next to her is a 40ish man, Wyatt, who is obviously troubled and depressed. Free spirit Ettie takes it upon herself to shake Wyatt up a little bit and show him some loving and caring. The two of them embark on a little adventure for the night and find themselves sharing and caring a lot more than they planned. And then the inevitable happens, Ettie finds out that her ex-boyfriend's dad is Wyatt. Uh oh.Turns out Wyatt is still grieving over the death a few years ago of his wife. He is awash in depression, guilt and grief. Ettie is very familiar with these feelings, having grown up with mean father and dysfunctional mother. Ettie and Wyatt embark on a bumpy road filled with love, but also the reality of a huge age difference, a son shocked and outraged that his father would sleep with his girlfriend (conveniently forgetting that she was his ex-girlfriend mostly by the son's choice) and with Ettie knowing that Wyatt was the only one that could pull himself out of his grief and depression. And, until that happened, all of the love in the world couldn't let them move forward. As I said, a wonderful read. I didn't rate it a complete 5 stars because on a few occasions the story kind of lost its direction (but quickly found it again) and I really, really wanted more background on Ettie's life. We had hints of maybe abuse and loneliness but never really delved into her story. All in all, however, I loved this book. And, I would be neglectful if I didn't give a shout out to my good friend, Yasmine, who recommended this book to me. less
