review 1: The prequel to the "Mortal Instruments" series, it follows the story of Tessa Grey and her two best friends or more than best friends, Will Herondale and James Carstairs. It's a Victorian setting with various steampunk methods worked into the story, giving it a classic gothic feel. I enjoyed the book, but the ending of the series was kind of a downer, depending on your opinion. Overall a good story if you want something preceding the world of the modern Shadowhunters.
review 2: I read these stories before I read the Mortal Instruments series. I'm really glad I read them in that order! I love knowing the background story for these characters because they really add to the understanding of the other series. I have to say, I think these 3 books are my favorite ... moreout of all of them. This is sci-fi, steam punk type of fiction with lots of monsters. If you are not a fan of stories with demons and vampires, then this is not for you. less
