review 1: This book is really great trash, and I say that with genuine affection. It's nothing akin to fine literature, but it's perfectly engaging fluff, and I enjoyed it despite some serious shortcomings, such as the fact I couldn't have told you what the plot was until about 2/3rds of the way through the book. The book abounds with scenes that are campy good fun but don't necessarily propel the story in any sensible direction. That scary old vampire guy -- what happened to him? Apparently there was no need for his scenes after all, but they were fun scenes. And that not-exactly-sex sex scene -- why was that in there? I guess as a way to have two characters boink without actually boinking, because that would relieve the sexual tension, and they still need to give each other hot fl... moreashes for the next hundred pages. The secondary characters in the book are mostly cartoons, but they support the sprightly pace of the storytelling well. The prose is lively and competent, even as it sketches out a story with little substance. The protagonist leans heavily into over-powered wish-fulfillment territory (she's part-vampire, so super-strong, and part-siren, so super-enticing to men), but she's likable and entertaining. There's shopping/clothing/makeup porn interspersed with weirdly realistic touches like the fact that several characters have therapists to help them deal with past traumas. This book is a perfect smoosh of urban fantasy and chick lit. It's absurd; it's fun; it was never meant to be deep. You might guess from my tone (and overall rating) that this is not really my cup of tea, but I was pretty won over, regardless. This book does what it sets out to do, and it does it well. I recommend this for readers who can relate to a bit of shopping/clothing/makeup porn, who are amenable to some good fluffy fun, and who are in the mood for some light-yet-rambunctious urban fantasy. I would also recommend getting the first book in the series (which I haven't read) because this novel was pretty clearly a sequel, and some of the plot-weirdness might have seemed less weird if I had been familiar with the backstory.
review 2: This is the third book in the series and I think the best one so far. I really like how the main character, Celia is being developed. Each book she gets to know more about her different abilities and they are just as much a surprise to her as the reader. I love the little bit of dry humor and wit that isn't cheesy, and leaves you with a giggle, not a "really did they just say that" moment. I find myself looking forward to reading the next one.... off to the library I go! less
