review 1: More of a 3.5 for me. It didn't feel like a super cohesive story to me for some reason. Maybe too many characters at play or something...I can't put a finger on it. I felt like the antagonist was just too ordinary a thinker who was actually really easily figured out and caught. I didn't really care for the on-going triad with John and Bruno let alone the background noise of Gaetano; I'm not feelin' it. I'll try the next book to see if the series has "jumped the shark" already. :(
review 2: Pretty good but not great. Here's the thing...This is book #4 in the series, and I found that the story had WAY too many references to people and events from earlier books in the series. The rules of this magical world are very complicated and seemed arbitrary when I just pl
... moreop into the 4th book. I don't think the use of back story was effectively done as it has been in other series by other authors.I'm also less than enthralled by the heavy reliance on magic that seems to be made up on the fly. I doubt this is true, but from only reading this one book, it just seems like every magic idea the author could think of got thrown into this series in a major mash-up. I mean, vampires, sirens, Isis, demons, ghosts, zombies, and more ALL in one story? Seriously? It's just way too much.I just found the book confusing in places, overly complicated, and too heavily dependent on the magic to carry the story instead of letting character development control the plot.If you're die-hard lover of stories based on magic, this series may be for you. But it's really important that you start with Book #1 in the series and read them in order. There are far too may references to prior stories in this one to avoid both confusion and boredom otherwise. less
