review 1: Sixteen-year-old Mary Shelley Black’s bright mind has always favored science; in the summer of 1918, the height of the Spanish Flu and the climax of the first World War, it is difficult to understand or accept the science behind a world filled with tragedy. As her world crumbles, Mary Shelley watches as those around her embrace spiritualism, home remedies, and anything that can bring back a sense of order. When her lost love appears from the grave Mary Shelley begins to question whether the science that has been her constant comfort can help her to solve a mystery that extends into the afterworld. A great blend of well- researched history (complete with rich descriptions of the preventive flu remedies) and magical realism wrapped up in a intriguing mystery, Winter’s... more first novel is a solid choice.
review 2: I really found myself enjoying this little book. Going into it knowing it was Young Adult my expectations were kind of low but I found the writing slightly above that which is typical for YA these days. The story was interesting, the time period and events were compelling and I found myself liking the main character very much. I even teared up a little at then end of the book which really surprised me. So while it's not great work of fiction, I'm giving it 4 stars because it was a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. less
