review 1: This anthology is really fascinating and original. I was reading random lines of random books in the library when I became riveted by these stories. The characters and their motivations are compelling and real, even as the settings are rich, fantastic, and largely metaphorical. I was always maddeningly curious as to how each story would end, and always surprised by the result. I enjoyed every complex story in this book and I definitely recommend it. Catherynne M. Valente is just amazing and on every page I envied her and couldn't read fast enough. Someone read this so I can discuss it with them!
review 2: I thought this collection of short stories by Valente was variable. Some of them were incredible, such as "Silently and Very Fast." Others, to me, were fairly
... more inaccessible and I felt too impatient to sit there for hours trying to ponder her witty allusions. She's also a bit too sharp edged for my taste, seeming to revel in shock rather than wanting to entertain the reader. I liked the title story about a baker demonness condemned to live in exile on Earth and how she built her demonnist, feminist community. less

Not every story in here is fantastic, but enough is to make it totally worth reading. I loved it.

Mixed. Definitely not one of her best.
