review 1: Questo breve racconto, originariamente pubblicato su Tor.com, funge in realtà da prequel al primo volume della serie, La bambina che fece il giro di Fairyland per salvare la fantasia e ci mostra come la giovane Malva passò dall’essere una ragazzina pratica che viveva per conto proprio, in tranquillità e lontana dalle avventure, al diventare regina governando su Fairyland.Sappiamo ovviamente come poi tutto finirà, con il suo regno illuminato che verrà distrutto dallo scadere del suo tempo su Fairyland facendole abbandonare il reame, il marito e il figlio non ancora nato… salvo poi vederla tornare moltissimo tempo dopo, cresciuta, maturata e incattivita da ciò che Fairyland le aveva fatto. Non più Regina ma Marchesa, inflessibile e dispotica padrona di Fairyland, ... moreantagonista di Settembre nel primo libro.Un racconto piacevole e carino, con diversi regali ai lettori: scopriamo come è nato Vento Verde, ritroviamo il Leopardo delle Brezze Lievi e Iago la Pantera, addirittura troviamo la mamma della Viverna.E in tutto ciò conosciamo Malva, e se il racconto ci porterebbe a provare simpatia per lei, sapere cosa le riserverà il futuro ci fa provare pietà nei suoi confronti.L’unica pecca del racconto è che da questo racconto Malva sembra quasi una creatura di Fairyland quando invece è una ragazzina umana di campagna finita lì e rimastaci per molto tempo…
review 2: When I finished the first book in the series, there were a lot of things that didn't make sense to me still, and this story sold me on the continuing the series. I'm not sure about the hard copies, but the digital copy of the first book comes bundled with this, and I feel like that's necessary. I honestly wish I'd read this before reading the first book, though I suspect it would have made the impact of the first books climax, less impressive. If ever there was a reason to add back story as an author though, this is it, and Valente does so beautifully. I was equally pleased with the simpler language of this, and the added age of the main character. The difference in ease of reading really helped me focus on what was going on rather than on word choice. And truthfully, this short story just didn't try so hard to impress me, and frankly impressed me more than the first book, but is ultimately what convinced me to go out and buy the second book. less
