review 1: This is a lovely lovely book, full of whimsy and enchantment and imagination. Valente has a wonderfully delicious mind that produces all sorts of fantasical senarios, characters, and objects. I am arrving at this a little backwards (which I don't think the author would mind) as this is the second book of the growing collection, and not the first.... But I don't lose out on knowledge and I didn't feel adrift. Though I am sure mega-fans would say I should read the first one now! :) It's a great light, mind-tingly read - good after something heavy or dull. Great for people who list fairy-tale, fantasy joyousness.
review 2: As the second installment, this book brought the same delightful writing style of Ms. Valente, but with a darker twist for our heroine. I enjoy... moreed the idea of our shadow-selves holding all the parts of ourselves that we keep hidden. It made me reflect on what my own shadow would hold. Of course, I missed the real Ell and Saturday, just as September did, but I suppose that was part of the point - adventures are almost never exactly what we'd hoped. less
