review 1: OK I can't decide if I'd rather invite Cecy Robson out for drinks--Or smack her silly. The Weird Girls have probably earned a spot on my Keeper shelf because A) I Love the way she writes B) Her characters are a load of funC) And I simply can't put the damn things downBut talk about adversity? It seems as if the whole world is against Celia. Not a shifter-cursed pre-birth because apparently the Weird Girls come from a long line of nutso genetic purists Celia fell for a purebred werewolf and struggles to earn the approval of his governing council. But Surprize! She proves herself over and over again, and the shitstorm never ends. I get it-they are cursed. Point taken, stop grinding it in, if nothing else my heart needs a break from the unremitting dirge. At this point I'm beg... moreinning to think Celia is nuts for sticking around. And that Mate-bond or not Eric needs to man the hell up or go be a wolf in the Canadian Rockies. The nutso purists they suffer to protect are a waste of good air.
review 2: This is book 3 in a series and I strongly recommend reading the books in order. There is a strong overall story arc and things will make a lot more sense if you start at the beginning. There are going to be some minor spoilers throughout this review. You have been warned. What I liked about the book:There’s lots of gripping action. While reading, I couldn’t put the book down, there was always something exciting happening. Definitely no slow or boring parts in this story.I also enjoyed the characters. They are all interesting and have unique traits. The characterization is consistent and the characters’ actions make sense. The author does a great job at portraying their emotions. I also enjoyed the interplay between the characters – it’s pretty intense at times but also made me smile in a number of places. What I didn’t like:Nothing happens. I know this sounds contradictory to what I wrote above, but while there’s lots of action, there’s no actual progress. After I finished the book and wasn’t glued to the page anymore, I realized that, where the overall story arc is concerned, we’re pretty much in the same place as before. Enemy shows up – fight ensues – enemy is vanquished. More powerful enemy shows up – more complicated fight ensues – well you get the idea. At least until the last big, bad, über-evil enemy at the end. Things are a little more involved there. But with the exception of the last few pages in the last chapter, that’s pretty much all that’s going on. Then, we’re faced with a sudden plot twist and a cliffhanger. Whoever likes cliffhangers?Even the relationship between Aric and Celia, well, in the middle of the book I had strong hopes that this annoying love triangle would finally be resolved – but no, we end up pretty much where we started. Also, the reason that Celia and Aric can’t be together has always sounded rather thin to me. I mean, his whole species will go extinct if he marries a non-were? Really?I also think that the author missed a great opportunity to add some depth to her story when she was portraying the bad guys. In the previous books, we learned that some of the bad guys are weres that rebelled because they had been ostracized and repressed and denied rights because they were loners, not part of a pack. Celia and her sisters even have a good friend who falls into this category. But still they fail to address the issue that this contributed to the war, and that some of the weres had a reason to rebel. When the bad guys in the book are described, any underlying motivation is missing. They are evil because they do bad things. They do bad things because they are evil. Conclusion:This book is much darker and more serious than the previous two books in the series. Bad and painful things happen to some of our favorite characters. I originally bought the first book in the series because it sounded funny and interesting. I read purely for entertainment, and I want a book that makes me feel better after I finish reading it. This book though, I felt rather sad and depressed after reading it. And frustrated because of the cliffhanger. That’s my completely subjective experience, of course.I found it hard to decide between three and four stars for this book. I wish I could give 3.5 stars. I’m giving it four because I will buy the next book to see where the story is going. less
