review 1: Anytime I read books about abuse it breaks my heart. In this book the most sad thing about the abuse Lety, her siblings, and her mom went through was that it seems as if their dad was invincible. It is the fact that their mom will not report to authorities and this guy gets away with murder literarily. You will think that the fact that their injuries are treated at the hospital, the authorities will take action. No.That being said, the romantic story of Brody and Lety of course is affected by her family situation. She did not want to be seriously involved with any man. 'Once bitten twice shy' kind of a thing. Of course Brody systematically broke down her defences. This is their story.I love the pace of this story. I love the fact that there was no cheating, even though it ... moreis NA story. There was no drunken 'sex with another person'. Brody's home situation was also very sad. Even though it is not physically abusive, it is emotionally traumatic. I wish the ending was not that abrupt. I wanted more. How are Brody and Lety doing, one, two, five years down the road?I will surely recommend this story. It is compelling.**A copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley for an honest review***
review 2: **I received a copy of this ARC for an honest review**This is the second book in the Shattered Past trilogy. It is about Lety, the younger sister of Mateo from the first book. She is a college student from an abusive home trying to get away from the abuse, and Brody, the easy going millionaire that she meets and falls in love with. Lety met and fell in love with Brody during their freshman year. Due to the tragedy that is her family, she broke up with him, feeling she wasn't good enough to date him. They run into each other during their third year and Brody is able to convince her to give them another try. While she is determined to make it through school with help from nobody, she learns that Brody's life wasn't nearly as perfect as she thought. As she gets more and more involved with him and his family, she decides to break a serious family tradition and fights back against the abuse of her father. I really liked getting to know Lety in this book after meeting her in the first book. She is very strong-willed and stubborn, fighting to overcome her upbringing and not lean on anyone, even if it means losing the one she loves. While upfront, Brody appears to not have a care in the world, he is actually shown to be a kindred soul to Lety, hiding a lot of pain and anger. He knows she is the one that can heal him and he's determined to make her let him heal her as well. less
