review 1: I tend to be a pessimist finding that that state is slightly closer to the truth than eternities and roses. As such, and with one canceled engagement in my tool belt, I picked this up fully hoping it to be a sad/bitter/lonely look into an institution that so many race smilingly into and leave in scowls. Well, I wasn't wrong! I think if you're a romantic regarding love and marriage, you should stand clear of anything written by Kultgen.(Either that or binge read all of them to catch up!) This isn't sweet and lovely. This is the equivalent of watching someone have the worst day of his life every single day and his realization that it won't get any better ever. As a romantic, this idea would be highly offensive. As a pessimi-realist, I say bravo. For all of you within relati... moreonships who ever wondered "does he think I'm too fat?" The answer is "yes, of course, lard ass!" This novel shows very brutally the impact of time on what could have started out as something so promising. Do I like the main character. He's not at the top of my favorite people list. But do I believe he exists? Absolutely. I believe and see evidence of how time and disappointments can strip human characters down to their ugly base. Kultgen does a phenomenal job of exploring our base selves. It will be fun to read the prequel to this. I somehow missed out on experiencing this character as a single man.
review 2: If I had to sum this book up in one line it would be "more of the same but not as good."I really enjoyed reading The Average American Male. The Average American Marriage, however, just feels tired and predictable as a sequel. Nothing happens that isn't predictable if you're familiar with the first book. The character feels stale and un-evolved. I like Kultgen's work so I didn't mind reading this, but I would most certainly re-reading The Average American Male rather than reading this, or moving on to his other work, such as Men, Women, and Children. less

This book is even better then the last one! Hilarious, and definitely honest.
