review 1: 400 pages of class A spy-fiction! A clever novel, even though there is no major plot-twist, and the author leaves no surprises for the last 20 chapters, but it's still a very solid work. Maybe not a masterpiece, but if you're a fan of the genre, then this novel is a must-read. The main characters are very charming, even though Thomas Kell doesn't have that James Bond vibe, he's still a mysterious charming spy. I enjoyed reading this book, and Charles Cumming's work will surely be on the top of my list whenever I'm looking for an entertaining spy-fiction.
review 2: For those people who loved Len Deighton and Le Carre, A FOREIGN COUNTRY will be a little treat. Steeped in tradecraft, it provides a wonderful modern take on how the current day spies ply their trade.
... more When the incumbent head of the British Secret Intelligence Service goes seemingly missing in France, Thomas Kell, a disgraced former MI6 spy is brought in from the cold to find her. There's only a few weeks before she steps into her job as the top spy in Britain, and Kell has to pull out all the stops to ensure his country doesnt get embroiled in its biggest intelligence scandal ever. less
