review 1: Alex Thompson’s life is following the script. A pre-law student at Columbia University, she’s focused on her grades, her life and her future. The last thing she needs is to reconnect with the boy who broke her heart.Dylan Paris comes home from Afghanistan severely injured and knows that the one thing he cannot do is drag Alex into the mess he’s made of his life. When Dylan and Alex are assigned to the same work study program and are forced to work side by side, they have to make new ground rules to keep from killing each other.Only problem is, they keep breaking the rules. The first rule is to never, ever talk about how they fell in love.Dylan and Alex love each other, in that deep, tortured, there is no one else type of way. Their relationship is the on again, off ag... moreain type filled with complications, misunderstandings and miscommunications. Added to the mix is their completely different backgrounds and the fact that Dylan has just returned from his time in the army. What I enjoyed most about this book was the characterisation: both the main characters were beautifully flawed and knew it. Dylan is damaged in so many ways, he's go PTSD, he's got survivor's guilt as well as physical injuries from his time serving. I also loved the way their relationship didn't necessarily define their lives, they loved each other but they could survive without each other. Another thing I enjoyed in this book is that it didn't downplay the importance of what the troops do or go through but it also didn't present war in a glamorised way. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and this author's writing.
review 2: I must say after enjoying A Song for Julia as much as I did, Just Remember to Breathe felt rather mediocre to me. This book has a lot of elements going for it, a wounded war veteran dealing with PTSD, a sweet and strong girl trying to forget her past with the aforementioned veteran and move on with her life when they bump into one another at college and get a second chance at love. But it failed to evoke any feelings in me for them. It was good and I did not get bored anywhere. So that is the best I can say about this book. less
