review 1: This book is absolutely lovely and surprisingly informative. I was expecting lots of lovely pictures, but got a very detailed history of American character art in the mid 20th century as well. The book ran from "Steamboat Willie" to "Frozen," so it was as encompassing as possible. I was a little disappointed to find that all the current films have illustrations in the medium of "digital." They are beautiful and just as stylistic as Mary Blair's, but I suppose I was naive in thinking that people were still painting pictures somewhere for these books. Highly recommended for Disney lovers, fans of 1950's American stylized art, or pop art historians.
review 2: So, today's reading has me thinking about the sources of the things I love, why I love them. At least part... more of my love of books is likely to come from the many Little Golden Books I read as a child. So I picked up this today, and there's a lot in here. A brief history of Little Golden Books and Disney's partnership with them. A look at the artists who illustrated them, including Mary Blair, Retta Scott Worcester and John Hench. Modern animators talking about the influence these books had on them as both children and as artists (which may be more similar than most realize.) And, most importantly, copious amounts of illustration with pieces of art from the entire history of Disney Golden Books. So I recommend this. Which is likely no surprise. Only complaint- that it might be too brief. But I am reviewing based on my personal response, and said response was strong enough that I can overlook its brevity. less
