Halting State
review 1: I'm a Charles Stross fan. As usual, there are prescient and provocative ideas on science fiction themes here in a well plotted, highly detailed story. Follows 'Halting State'; begins, much in the same way, as a police procedural in a near-future Scotland. As the title suggests, the book explores the seamier side of everything it touches ... communication technology, micromanufacturing, artificial intelligence ... it's cringeworthy for the sensitive, but a credit to the author in that it can pull you into its world.
review 2: Not an easy book to read, but the pay off at the end is enormous. Smart, sophisticated and intelligent, this one takes a piercing look at the future that is frighteningly possible, in the worst possible way. Stross makes fun of the Holmesia
... moren myth of the single lonely but brilliant detective, even the conventional understanding of artificial intelligence. He cooks up a story full of coincidences which will make your head shake disbelievingly and then he will give you such a plausible explanation that you will feel very stupid about feeling superior just a few minutes ago! Quite a read, and he does for internet conventions what Gibson did for cyberspace in general, and that's no mean feat. less

Interesting near future setting. Ending was a bit of a letdown, obviously set up for a sequel.

Sequel to Halting State. Same style. Left me a little disappointed.

Excellent story. Somewhat freaky at points.

Software can be evil, it appears.
