review 1: It took a while to get into this book, why I'm not really sure. It sort of seemed slow to begin with or maybe it was simply because I was already trying to figure out the puzzle before I had any of the pieces. Lucy has loved two men in her life and her father took one away and a fire took another. Now the Duke of Sussex is after her and wants to make her his. Since the first moment the Duke laid eyes on Lucy he has always wanted her, and has been in love with her for a long time. This book includes a sneaky father, people coming back from death, mystery, passion, and discovery. I would have ranked it higher, but I felt it drawn out a little bit and not enough in others.
review 2: This historical romance has a dash of paranormal, although that aspect of the stor
... morey is developed almost not at all. I was disappointed that the Brethren Guardian lore and the plans of the villain weren't given more weight in the story. The set-up of the romance is that Sussex is this cold and proper duke who wants to marry the reluctant Lucy. She has feelings for someone else and doesn't like the "priggish" Sussex. This premise had shades of Darcy and Elizabeth which made me inclined to love it. I almost did. But then....Sussex doesn't act like a Darcy at all. He's very forward with her, and very early on in the story too. He's borderline rapey even. He frequently thinks about "claiming" her and that he can't control himself around her. At one point he practically accosts her in a darkened alley, putting his hand over her mouth to stop her from crying out for help because she's so scared. He then proceeds to forcibly move her into his home, tie her up, because she's just such a headstrong thing that won't listen to him. All he wants to do is keep her safe! Given all this, her stubborn assertion that he is "priggish" and passionless quickly becomes forced, a mere plot contrivance meant to keep our lovers apart. When she finally proclaims her love for him, she uses the words "You've broken me." Imagine me grimacing. I do not like love stories that entail a silly, stubborn miss that must be brought to heel by the more reasonable and dominate man who has more or less bullied her into submission. less
