review 1: This cookbook, a collection of dishes found in the Song of Ice and Fire series (i.e. Game of Thrones, et al) is far more than just a silly superfan book trying to coattail another. First off, it really is an official companion piece and even includes an introduction from Martin himself. Additionally, it has appeal for more than GoT fans - it's an historian's dream. The recipes, ingredients, and methodologies are all thoroughly researched. Dishes are presented as they would have been hundreds of years ago, including primary source material as written. Then they are "translated" for modern kitchens (and cupboards). Along with these Medieval versions, many recipes are doubled, including modern interpretations, as well (for example, Poached Pears are mentioned in the ser... moreies; there's a Medieval Poached Pear recipe, which includes an original primary source from the 1400s, along with a "translation" of it for modern kitchens -- plus, there's a Modern Poached Pear recipe, which is a completely different take on the dish). The whole thing is organized by Westeros locale: The Wall, The North, King's Landing, etc., thus allowing similar foods to be categorized together (which translates well for seasonal cooking applications). The authors also include suitable pairings for each dish, which is a nice addition for menu planning. Sure, there are a lot of these I will never attempt, whether because I don't care for the ingredients (beets, insects) or because they might take more skill or effort than I can (or am willing to) offer. Nevertheless, there are 20+ I will most certainly try - and probably quite soon. There's good background info in there, too - and the whole thing can easily be read, studied, and applied in a day. 4 stars
review 2: I give this book 5 stars based on the balls and gumption it takes to publish a cookbook with recipes that call for "1 rattlesnake, approximately 2 pounds, cleaned and gutted" and "5 pigeons, cleaned and dressed." The photos of the medieval vs the modern recipes add a nice touch. The breakfasts, while similar, offer different incarnations for the various parts of Westeros, and while I don't *need* two pages telling me how to serve toast and eggs with jam, if GRRM can do the same, why not these lovely innkeepers? It's practically canon to do so! less
