review 1: The beginning of this book surprised me and would have done to any other reader which has followed the story line. Jack (the main character) finds himself in a morbid state and all his belongings have been stolen. The story then goes on of his recovery and befriending a ronin (masterless samurai) which leads to a thrilling adventure of Jack finding all his belongings (including a item called a "rutter". His dads log book which controls the seas and is deeply important to Jack because it was his dads dying wish to keep it safe. Near the end of the story many astonishing things are revealed and leaves you mystified. The only thing that I believe is a bit unrealistic is that he encounters many duels and near death experiences but never seems to get hurt. This is a beautifully... more written book which keeps you hooked from the very beginning. The suspense that gets your heart pounding is truly incredible. I would recommend this book to any good adventure reader that loves to read on to discover secrets. I would definitely say to read the whole series it is a type of book where you need to know the background to understand the story. The age recommendation would be 11 to 16 because of the intense violence but other than that it is really a mind blowing story. Other than the CHERUB series this has been a excellent series so far.
review 2: So far, this is proving to be a fun series to read. Picks up nicely where the last book left off and continues to be entertaining and good, escapist fun! (Just what I need) :)This series is a lot of fun to read. This book seemed a little jerky here and there with the story, instead of flowing at a steady pace, once or twice is was like, BOOM!!! Okay, so now we're here. I guess that's one way of advancing the plot. But, for fans of Percy Jackson or those who enjoy tales of samurai and ninja - this series is a lot of fun. I'll be getting to the latest book soon. This read did exactly as I hoped it would...provided me with some nice escapism from worrying about finding another job.Looking forward to the future... less
