review 1: I thought that this graphic novel was very clever and engaging. Graphic novels are not a genre that I gravitate towards especially when looking for mentor texts to use in my classroom instruction. I enjoyed reading some of the fairy tales over others. Some of them were very hard to follow and there was too much going on for one page. I do see this appealing to my higher level readers, especially the boys. I find that the boys in my class have the most difficulty finding books that they are interested in. In my 1st grade classroom I would use Goldilocks and the Three Bears because this is a fairy tale that most kids are familiar with. There are also not any words for this particular story, only pictures. When I introduce "3 ways to read a book" when I am launching the Daily... more 5, this would be an awesome text to use to model 'read the pictures'. I could also see myself reading this with my high level reading group and asking them to do an extension activity where they create their own comic strip.
review 2: This would be a fun inclusion in a fairy tale unit, and it would make a nice introduction to graphic novels, with the familiar stories and the variety of illustrations. With a few exceptions, these were simply cartoon versions of the fairy tales; not many had any of the additional insights or twists that I've come to expect from the layers of meaning possible in graphic novels. A few of these tales were unfamiliar to me, which was a nice surprise. less

My kids loved this! And it's nice to see a Baba Yaga story in this collection.
