review 1: I discovered this book when looking for another mystery set in the Yucatán Peninsula whose title and author I had forgotten but eventually was able to dig up again. ( Gary Alexander's _Blood Sacrifice_ ). Alexander's books contain a comic element which was missing here. But the plot was fast-moving, and the story was entertaining enough to hold my interest until I finished the book. I wouldn't seek this book out, but it's worth reading if you happen upon it at the library or in a used bookstore and are looking to kill some time.
review 2: This is a decent adventure tale interrupted entirely too often by the author's attempts to insert humor into his characters dialog. An archeologist goes missing and the trouble shooting team of Payne and Jones is called in by
... more an old friend to find him. A lot of historical fiction about the Maya and Aztecs is spun into the background of this present day adventure yarn based in Mexico. The build up is unfortunately not sustained, as the ending is rather weak and disappointing. Book provided for review by the good folks at Library Thing. less

Not is best but still a great read, adventure and as ever; something to learn. Recommended!

Meh. Took an inordinate amount of time to get to a boring ending.
