review 1: This is such a beautifully written book, it draws you in and makes you really care about what happens to the characters. Considering that the story is so well known, this still feels like a fresh and new insight into the mythology. I read the book in translation, which always poses interesting questions about authorship and language, but since the original was praised for its language and power, I can only believe that this was a very successful rendering. One of the most poignant things I have read in years.
review 2: I discovered this book by attending a lecture about German Literature while I was a graduate student in the late 1980's. She started the lecture by stating 'This is a book which will change your life'. It certainly changed my perspective about th
... moree deployment of missles in Europe. Wolf is a premier German feminist author but this is not a feminist book in the sense I have of a feminist book. It ia book about warfare, and relationships, and how the past is repeated. Wolf constucts this book in 2 parts - one is an interpretation of the story of Cassandra within the Trojan War and the other is a set of essays describing Wolf's experiences concerning German citizen responses to American plans to deploy cruise missles in Europe. The lecturer advized reading the second part first - the contemporary situation, then the story of Troy. It is one of my must reads, I have read this book at least 6 times, and I know I will read it again. less
