review 1: This was OK. Just OK. I was intrigued by the reviews, which seemed to hint at something original and distinct, but this is just a standard murder mystery with a rather unconvincing fairy tale narrative thrown in. The two women whose diaries form the basis of the novel are appealing, but the young man whose story frames these diaries is dull and uninteresting. Also, there is much here that is implausible to the point of taking the reader out of the book (in particular, the quality of the diaries, given the circumstances under which they are meant to have been written). The significance of a major character who enters late into the novel is also extremely unclear, and I didn't have the energy or interest to go back and figure out just what the reader is supposed to make of h... moreim. It was a quick read and I did want to know what happened, but nothing about it stood out.
review 2: A quick review before I forget some of my initial impressions. This suspense novel was unique in that it incorporated a sort of fairytale feel along with the horror and mystery. It takes place in Ireland, and one of the great strengths of the novel is how very much it gives one a sense of the culture and attitude of the people. This may sound simplistic, but to me, it gave me a fascinating sense of the present-day Irish, in a way that had nothing to do with leprechauns and pots of gold, but in a way that highlighted their culture as different from their English neighbors. This novel was unique, and difficult to describe mix of horror and lust for life. I enjoyed it, and hope that the author writes more in future. less

This is a tale like no other. Possessive in more ways than one. Ireland. Glad to have read it.

Started out good but then tappered off and was rather anticlimactic at the end.
