review 1: La Dodd comes highly recommended by one of my favorite authors, Karen Hawkins, so I try to grab her books when I see them in the used bookstores. They look like your run-of-the-mill historical romances, but I assure you that this book exceeded my expectations.Miss Emma Chegwidden (there's a mouthful) is a demure and unassuming companion to one of the most horrid and spoiled grande dames of current society, one Lady Lettice. Emma's job is primarily to remain at the beck and call of this unattractive but amply endowed widow, who is constantly surrounded by fortune-seeking admirers interested less in her charms than in her estates. Emma is very proper, though, and does her mistress' bidding without complaint. When we first meet her, we really feel she is a wallflower, an invi... moresible young woman with no ambition or purpose beyond earning her daily bread.Fortunately for Emma, her life changes dramatically at many turns after she meets the Reaper, a ghostly form who rides through the countryside instilling fear and unrest through the downtrodden villages of Moricadia. An accident with epic social consequences forces Emma to go from paid companion to homeless waif to paid companion again in the span of less than 24 hours, thanks in large part to the Reaper. At the home of her new employer, Emma meets a very enigmatic and arrogant Michael Durant, the long-lost heir to the Duke of Nevitt. Kept prisoner in Moricadia for withholding information, Michael is allowed some social excursions-but is mainly under the thumb of Prince Sandre, the vicious and vain ruler of Moricadia. Sandre wants info on the Reaper, who is making such a fuss that Sandre's influence in Moricadia is suffering, and he believes Michael has it.The tale that ensues is actually very riveting. There is something of a triangle that develops between Emma, the reaper, and Michael, with Prince Sandre throwing himself into the mix of men looking for Emma's affections. The attraction between Emma and Michael is initially one-sided, as she has eyes only for the masked Reaper, her mysterious nighttime companion, while Michael has eyes only for Emma. The Reaper is a silent player, never speaking to Emma, only giving her an occasional nod or wave of his hand-yet stroking her skin and even kissing her with ferocity when they are alone at night. If you like historical romances, you will definitely like this. If you are a fan of intrigue and suspense, there is quite a bit of that here too. And if you like reading about the underdog getting his revenge on the established regime, I DEFINITELY recommend this, as the end has several unexpected (and, sadistic person that I am, gloriously delightful) twists. In the category of historicals, this gets 5 stars.
review 2: This little Scarlet Pimpernel/V for Vendetta romance is set in the made up dictatorship of Moricadia. Our hero is a perfect mix of Sir Percy and V while our heroine is a perfect mix of Marguerite and Evie. Otherwise, he's the prisoner who couldn't possibly have time to run around the countryside in a mask and strike fear into the heart of a despot, right? She's the seemingly shy little English violet with an Amazonian warrior inside her and the ability to heal. The side characters actually have a point and character arcs. Aimee was my favorite character. Sandre was a pretty dastardly villain. less

There is nothing historical about this book, I read it, I was not pleased, but I have read worse.

More serious than it sounds. Wonderful romance, but fabulous plot. Great historical chick lit.
