review 1: I loved this book, though it was creepy and a bit shallow. Klosterman is well-known among Gen-Xers from his essays on popular cultures that have appeared in Spin magazines, Grantland website, and 4 published books. This is his second novel and it is very well written with terrific suspense, outstanding dialogue, original characters, and very curious insights into human nature. The plot tracks the relationship of a scientist who has developed an advanced cloaking device with a sincere but naive psycho-therapist. At first it seems like the story about the brilliant scientist will be more interesting but it is the psycho-therapist who is actually more dynamic. The shallow part was the psycho-therapy, which seemed to have no theoretical basis. Often I was kept guessing w... morehat Klosterman would have the characters do next. Thinking critically about the characters and their dialogue seemed to be exactly what Klosterman was asking his readers to do and I found it fun and stimulating.
review 2: The first 1/3 of this book basically sets up something you already know to be true based on the title of this book. The next 1/3 is my-dinner-with-Andre -esque storytelling, Chuck Klosterman at his conversational best. The last 1/3 is unsettling and very weird. A lot of this book is unsettling and very weird, but it's also interesting and hard to put down. Not my favorite book in the world and certainly not my favorite by Klosterman, but perfect for a plane or some such. less
