review 1: So, look. Do you like YA space adventures that are overall kind of trite, but fast paced and fun? Cool. Dive in. Looking for something that... isn't any of that? Don't read this. Duh.I really appreciate the main character's brother - for a YA novel, he offers a pretty accessible version of someone with a mental health disorder. Also, the fact that the main character treats him like a real person, recognizes her own flaws in relating to him, and tries to operate within HIS reality as opposed to trying to force him into a "normal" viewpoint is kind of huge.UPDATE: Upgraded to 4 stars once I realized that I hold selfpublished novels to a completely different standard than regular published novels. Evaluate on your own merits.
review 2: Normally I give free/indie b... moreooks a little extra leeway when writing a review, knowing that the author was nice enough to let me read their work for free and the person probably didn't have an editor, but this book is good enough to be judged against all the mainstream books that cost $9.99! I loved it. Definitely worth the 5 stars and I'm going to read the next one too. I love the dystopian feel while it was more sci-fi, the darker themes still bled through and made it more my favorite kind of book. I also loved the autism perspective, it was so unique and interesting at the same time. The characters were believable and round, the story was gripping and exciting, the plot was throughly worked through and the premise was such an enchanting idea. Ever since Total Recall with Arnold, I've been secretly dreaming of life on Mars! What a great book. I loved it. I even shed a tear! That's rare for me. ♥ less
