review 1: The mystery was good, graphic and well paced, although there was a point for me where everything turned on its head and I not only knew who the murderer was but I suspected (correctly) their reason too. What I didn't quite believe in was the relationship, maybe it was the speed that they progressed at, or possibly because I struggled to connect with Charles.Well written, with the art galley setting as an integral part of the story not just a backdrop.
review 2: I started reading this novella in the build up to moving house, and couldn't get into it at the time as it was fairly dark and menacing, beginning with the discovery of a murder. However, I promised myself that I would come back to it when I was more relaxed, and I'm so glad I did. It's hard to know how t
... moreo categorise this story, as it is both a romance and a mystery, the two being intimately linked. Narrator Charles Garrett is the owner of an art gallery, whose protege has been brutally murdered. As Charles tries to cope with the loss of his friend, everyone in his life comes under suspicion as they all have secrets.I think if this had been written by someone with less skill then it could have been a run of the mill mystery, but in Clare London's hands it becomes so much more. I was particularly impressed by the way she wove the two sculptor's works into the narrative, so that the art world wasn't just a trendy backdrop but an integral part of the plot. Sculptures and photographs all signify so much more than Charles initially realises, and the moment when all is revealed was incredibly powerful, and took me completely by surprise.Clare's prose is magnificent, and the erotic scenes were both hot and meaningful, adding to the atmosphere rather than diverting.Even if you find Charles a bit of a cold fish to begin with (I know I did), I urge you to give this story a chance - it's one of the most complex, fascinating and atmospheric stories I've read in the m/m genre. less
