review 1: My gawd! the last three chapters really pulled me in...and it is really like reliving that scene of the 1997 movie Titanic as the ship went down. My emotions where all over the place and some endearing characters here i'm afraid won't make it till the end. I do love the period setting and the paranormal twist into the story. At first I couldn't sympathize much with the attitude of the heroine Tess, who is a lady's maid until through out the course of the story I began to understand more the kind of mentality that she has and how she perceives herself. For someone whose station in life is clearly defined by the social classes in England at that time, i think that Tess is braver than most girls in her time, especially when confronted something as not supposed to exist. And h... moreer love interest dear Alec, was confusing at first but also a bit intriguing and sometimes a bit sappy...but it is expected there is cheesiness in their romance but the period setting calls for it and so i didn't mind much..it didn't annoy me because I feel for Alec's situation as well. I came to care for the other characters too esp. Mr. Howard Marlowe - Alec's dad. I hate her employer Lady Regina, she is the epitome of a haughty ton. And most of all I hate Mikhail - i want to put a silver bullet into his heart but since he is heartless i will take out his head instead. I like how Gray pulls you into the story, gradually and steadily and then hit you with the right emotions with that dramatic sinking of the Titanic. Towards the end I was wailing through that tragic event, Ms. Gray did that chapter beautifully. Over all I end up feeling quite devastated but in a good way. It wasn't as tragic as I thought it could be, for Tess and Alec I mean and thus my heart can go on after this :)
review 2: i don't know if i liked it or not because i rate books based from the feels it evoked in me, and while reading this book, there was quite a few of those, feels, i mean. i threw the book, TWICE (good thing it was a hardbound), laughed sarcastically, and cried in frustration. so, yeah. it was just, it tried to be unpredictable too much that i don't understand what to feel anymore, it was a roolercoaster ride, yes, but one i did not enjoy. why three stars then, because at some point i was loving it, the heroine was likable, she's not a cheesy-iloveyousomuch-i'lldiewithoutyou type that i abhor, in fact, shes a strong-willed woman with her head out of the clouds, i like it. yeah, that's about it. less
