review 1: Seven year old: I like how the author made the cub's words white and the mama bear's words blue. That way I could tell who was talking. I liked how when they were in the snow, they were blending in so well. I could barely see them. I liked how in the end the polar bear said, "I love you." I also liked how the mama bear said how she would teach the baby bear what it needs to know. I also like how when they were swimming in the ocean, the author made them swim under the water and how the snowstorm looked so real because there were so many snowflakes. There are a lot of snow flakes in a snowstorm. Lastly, I like how the grass is blueish and the front cover is covered in sparkles. Mom: This is one of my favourite books to read with my daughter. It's just the right reading leve... morel for her and, though I didn't even notice it, the different colored dialogue does clue her in to who is speaking and helps her understand the story better. It has a sweet, 'mother will always love and support you' theme and I find the muted colors visually appealing. It's just plain a pretty book.
review 2: Charlotte would give this a three, Mama a four. She's maybe a little old for it, but I want to make sure we mix in some picture books with few words per page to give her a chance to start recognizing some words. I love this book, and it's simple palette of whites, greys, and blues. Plus, I'm always a sucker for parent/child stories. Something else I just realized now - even though scientifically the parent must be the mother, the word "Mama" is never used, so it could easily be a Papa polar bear and child. I really like that. less
