review 1: This book totally disappointed me. It was so promising (vampires! steampunk!) but it failed explain the dynamics underlying the central relationship. I get why Adele fell for her rescuer: as she herself points out, he risked himself time and again for her sake, he intrigues her, and defies all her expectations. But what fueled Gareth's interest in humanity? The only explanation the authors provide is that he misses the good old days when he and his father hunted and life wasn't so easy, but that falls far short of explaining anything. We're left to guess why he, of all vampires, wonders about art and culture and love, which was wholly unsatisfying to me. Did I miss something? Please tell me if you think so!
review 2: Not unnecessarily encumbered by steam
... morepunk contrivances and refreshingly light on the romance, this is a swashbuckling tale of vampires and humans struggling for control of Europe. Our plucky young heroine is the Empress of the great European nation, set to marry the mustachioed blustering American cowboy vamp killer (she's never met), when she is kidnapped by animalistic vampires and imprisoned in the Tower of London. Her only hope is the dashing hero Greyfriar, a Zorro-like figure who appears mysteriously to fight off the vampires when most needed. Somehow this pulp novel of a plot is buoyed by some good solid world building, subplots about a contested vampire succession, and lots of believable secondary characters. Audio narration is wonderfully done by Janes Marsters (Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Gory but in a Victorian rather than dark contemporary way, this book is good adventure-filled pseudo-turn of the 20th century fun. less

Thoroughly enjoyed the story. By chapter three I had ordered the other two books in the series.
